Asthma At School |
|
|
As we prepare for our children to head back to school, it is important to ensure that school staff are aware and prepared to deal with with our children's asthma and/or allergies. Well controlled asthma during the school year results in less absenteeism from class and school trips due to illness and doctor's appointments. Some common triggers found in schools include:
- dust mites
- chalk dust
- strong odours
- viral infections
- cleaning products
- some foods
To reduce the presence of these triggers parents should ask the following: Does your school provide good indoor air quality? Are there any pets in the classroom? Is the school smoke free, scent free, and peanut free for children who are bothered by these things?
The best way to ensure your child's safety is to make all staff aware of your child's asthma and develop a treatment plan. Regular follow up with teachers is also a great way to determine if your child is having symptoms at school. Staff should know how to properly administer medications, when to give them and know what to do in the event of an attack.
