| Asthma is all in the head. |
Asthma is a lung condition and is not caused by emotions or nervousness. However if asthma is poorly controlled, stress, anxiety and tension can make an asthma episode worse. Children with asthma should be treated the same way as other children.

| All people with asthma wheeze. |
Some children with asthma will only cough and will never have a wheeze. This is still asthma and the child will benefit from asthma medications.
| |
| Asthma can be cured. |
Asthma can be controlled but cannot be cured. Medication can help control the twitchiness and sensitivity of the air passages but cannot cure the condition.
| |
| All children outgrow asthma. |
Many children with asthma get better during later childhood and adolescence but it is very difficult to predict which children will do this.
Children with mild cases of asthma in their early years are more likely to improve, however the outlook is not as good for children with more severe cases, particularly in those with severe eczema. Some children do not outgrow asthma but the symptoms become mild and easier to control as they grow older.
| |
| Asthma is more common in sensitive, nervous children. |
There is no basis to support this. Asthma is not caused by behaviour and emotions therefore personality type is not a factor in predicting who will develop asthma.
