Starting in 2002, there will be a phase out of chloroflurocarbon (CFC) based meterd dose inhalers (also known as puffer or MDI). Alternatives are now coming on to the market.
The Montreal Protocol signed in 1987 recognized CFC's as ozone depleting substances. Since then, Canada and other countries have been deceloping a national transition strategy to phase out the use of CFC's in MDI's.
The planned phase out schedule is:
July 1, 2002- Prohibit the production and importation of CFC-MDI's for Salbutamol
July 1, 2002- Prohibit the sale of nasal sprays containing CFC's
January 1, 2003- Prohibit the sale of CFC-MDI's for Salubatmol
January 1, 2004- Prohibit the production and importation of CFC-MDI's for corticosteroids
January 1, 2005- Prohibit the production and importation of all other CFC-MDI's.
